Motivation-Definition, Meaning & Types

Motivation is the force that drives an individual towards an action, goal, or success in either a personal or professional life. It is that which drives one to wake up from the bed in the morning, sets up new goals, and pushes towards achieving them, fighting with all odds. Suppose motivation slips down; everything becomes almost stagnant, and sometimes one would feel tired even to complete the simplest task.

Understanding motivation is crucial because it influences our behaviors, decisions, and overall mindset. Whether in work, studies, fitness, or personal development, motivation plays a fundamental role in keeping us engaged and committed.

Basic Definition of Motivation

Motivation is the psychological process that initiates, guides, and sustains goal-oriented behaviors. Simply put, it is the reason behind our action. While motivation might arise from internal determinants (like personal improvement or curiosity) or from an external reason (like rewards or social pressure), it is the force that tells us the direction to put effort and morality in persisting to achieve our tasks or goals.

What Is Motivation?

Motivation is more than simple intent; it encompasses emotional, cognitive, and social elements that give strength to our drive. It is the motivation that fuels our ambitions and carries us through obstacles. People get things done when drives are stronger: productive, focused, and inspired. However, low drives create conditions for procrastination, boredom, and a feeling of stagnation.

Factors of Motivation

Motivation is made up of various factors that drive behavior in interaction. These factors are typically divided into three main categories, which are:

  • Activation- The first decision to act. This is the decision point where a person decides to act toward a goal.

  • Persistence- The continued effort to accomplish a goal even though deprived by obstacles. Persistence says that motivation cannot die the instant failure occurs.

  • Intensity- The degree of strength with which a person tries to achieve his/her goal. An example: Some may be very motivated, making extreme efforts, while others may exert lower intensity yet not really stay committed.

Types of Motivation

Motivation can be categorized into different types based on its source and nature. These major types are intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation, while their subtypes exist.

1. Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation occurs in a person from within. In this type of motivation, actions are done for personal satisfaction, for passion, and for internal reward rather than for external reasons. If a person is intrinsically motivated, there is something enjoyable or fulfilling for the individual within that action. Some examples include:

  • Pursuing a hobby for one's own enjoyment
  • Studying a subject simply because of curiosity
  • Engaging in exercise for self-improvement rather than external validation

2. Extrinsic Motivation

Extrinsic motivation is fueled by external rewards such as money, recognition, or social approval. People who are extrinsically motivated perform tasks not necessarily because they enjoy them but because of the benefits they will receive. Some examples are:

  • Working to earn a salary
  • Studying to get good grades
  • Exercising to receive compliments from others

3. Achievement Motivation

This type of motivation means setting and getting goals. Persons who are achievement-motivated are oriented toward personal and professional success, often walking an extended mile to better their performance.

4. Power Motivation

People with power motivation seek control, influence, and leadership. This motivation type is common among those who desire authority and wish to impact their surroundings.

5. Affiliation Motivation

Affiliation motivation is concerned with relationships and social connections. Such people look for belongingness and friendship, as well as for social interaction.
